Psychiatric Support To Mentally Disordered Offenders Within The Prison SystemPhillip Vaughan, Maria Kelly and Nick Pullen report on a study of mentally disordered offenders held in prisons covered by the Wessex Consortium. It aimed to determine their numbers and ideal treatment settings, and highlight implications for the development of local services. The findings reveal shortcomings amongst all professionals involved in the care of such offenders, and the authors conclude that facilities, procedures and staffing in relation to mental health care in prisons need to be reviewed, and that a more vigorous and pro-active stance should be taken by community agencies to improve liaison with regard to prisoners from their area.
