The Welsh Language, Oppression And Probation Practice

The effect of language oppression is still relatively unexplored in social work and probation text books. In this article, Doris Adlam, probation officer in a groupwork team in the North Wales Probation Service, and Elisabeth Lynn, Lecturer in Social Work at the University of Wales, Bangor, explore how it can be used as an instrument of oppression, and argue that a genuinely bilingual service is a crucial prerequisite to effective practice with Welsh speaking probation clients.
